Advanced Driver Improvement (ADI)
The Advanced Driver Improvement course is designed for Florida drivers who have been directed to complete a higher-level driver improvement program.
FLHSMV specifically requires ADI in certain situations, including when a Florida driver license has been suspended because of an accumulation of points.
Who may need ADI?
You may be required to take an ADI course if:
Your Florida driver license was suspended for excessive points
FLHSMV has instructed you to complete an Advanced Driver Improvement course
A court or other authorized agency has specifically ordered ADI
You are completing certain requirements related to repeated crashes or driver-license reinstatement
ADI is different from the shorter Basic Driver Improvement course. If your notice specifically says Advanced Driver Improvement, make sure you enroll in ADI rather than BDI.
What does the course cover?
ADI provides more extensive instruction in:
Defensive driving
Collision prevention
Hazard recognition
Florida traffic laws
Driver attitude and decision-making
Distracted and impaired driving
Speed and space management
Responsible driving behavior
How does the online course work?
Your course is completed entirely online through our approved provider. You can access the program from an internet-connected computer, tablet or compatible device and complete the required instructional material and assessments.
Once you successfully complete the course, completion is processed according to FLHSMV and provider requirements.
Taking ADI for a license reinstatement or special FLHSMV requirement? Review the notice you received from FLHSMV to make sure you complete every required step.
Important: Some situations involve additional requirements beyond simply completing ADI. For example, Florida's 3 Crashes in 3 Years requirement includes 12 hours of an approved ADI course plus four hours of behind-the-wheel training and an extended driving test.
3 Crashes in 3 Years Program
Have you been notified by FLHSMV that you must complete the 3 Crashes in 3 Years requirement?
Florida drivers who meet the state's 3 Crashes in 3 Years criteria are required to complete additional driver improvement and behind-the-wheel training. This requirement generally applies when a driver is convicted of, or pleads no contest to, a third traffic offense that caused a crash within a 36-month period.
Need Your Required 4 Hours of Driving Training?
East Coast Driving Academy offers the required 4-hour behind-the-wheel training, completed as two private 2-hour driving sessions.
If you received a notice from FLHSMV, review your notice carefully to confirm your individual requirements and deadline before enrolling.
